Interested to understand what is meant by the term chamber music? Or perhaps you are about to attend your first chamber music concert and want to know just what’s in store? Or would you like to immerse yourself in the music of the 3 most prolific chamber music composers of the Classical and Early Romantic periods.

Chamber Music Essentials is an innovative music course designed to provide an insight into the rich diversity of this intimate form of music-making.

Presented by Sydney University Centre for Continuing Education in association with Musica Viva, Chamber Music Essentials is the first CCE music course to combine seminar workshops with live performances by groups of musicians - both in the classroom and at the City Recital Hall at Angel Place.

Included in this eight session course are six evening seminar workshops presented by Sydney-based musician and educator Genevieve Lang and attendance at two concerts (preceded by introductions by Ms. Lang) from the Musica Viva 2010 International Concert Season by the duo Alina Ibragimova, violin, and Cédric Tiberghien, piano, as well at the Atos Trio from Berlin.

Read interview with educator Genevieve Lang.

Discover the social and historical context of different styles of chamber music as the music itself comes alive in performances by string quartets and other instrumental ensembles. You will embark on a journey into the world of chamber music, framed by an in-depth exploration of the music of three groundbreaking composers – Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann. No prerequisite music knowledge is required to experience how chamber music can enchant, amuse, elevate, excite and calm the human spirit.

The workshop seminar course format is designed to promote active listening and include discussion among all participants who will communicate their personal experiences.

Up-close gatherings with performing musicians offer new perspectives in the experience of chamber music as an art form.

Your appreciation of chamber music will be enhanced forever as you gain a greater understanding and knowledge of this inspirational music.

The best thing is that no prerequisite music knowledge is necessary!  The only requirement for participants is that you are interested in music and curious to know more.

Here's what participants say about Chamber Music Essentials:

"Just truly fabulous - inspiring, elegant, humorous, informative."

The presenter was excellent as a communicator and very knowledgeable."

"This course would win my nomination for 'Best prepared and presented Continuing Education class' ..."
