DAVID PEREIRA cello
David Pereira commenced learning the cello in Canberra, continued at the NSW State Conservatorium and Indiana University. From 1980 to 1987 he was principal cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and from 1988 to 1990 principal cello with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He was also (founding) cellist of the Australia Ensemble for the entire decade. From 1990 until mid-2008 David was Senior Lecturer in Cello at the ANU School of Music. Now he is a free-lance cellist/teacher with enthusiasm for writing, composing, and conducting.
His repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works that have involved creative collaborations with Australian composers, dancers and painters. There are numerous solo and chamber recordings on the Tall Poppies label and occasional awards that attest to the high quality of his work. He describes cello playing and teaching as his metaphorical Everests to be climbed and recently published his third book about cello playing: ‘The Larrikin Cellist’.
