Go For 2&5®
As a result of our innovative music programs being presented in schools around one of the world’s biggest and remote regions, school students in in Western Australia are learning about nutrition and how to prepare healthy meals
The Musica Viva In Schools coordinated music education programs throughout Western Australia is assisted through sponsorship by Healthway to promote the healthy nutrition message: Go For 2 (servings of fruits) & 5 (servings of vegetables) per day. We believe this is a fantastic message to promote to our school audiences, and proudly promote the initiative
Western Australia is one of the largest states in the world musicians required to travel up to 400 kilometres between schools with student populations as small as 14 – 16 students. The musicians from around Australia in many cases provide the schools with their live music experience which works to provide an overall beneficial program for the students and teaching staff alike
As part of the partnership with Healthway, students learn the importance of healthy eating through a giveaway merchandise as well as an educational song bringing forward the message. Through a partnership with the Perth Royal Show, Healthway produced a cookbook containing healthy recipes prepared by children around the State and it is now being distributed to teachers and students in schools involved in the Music Viva In Schools programs
All the recipes in the cookbook resulted from a competition involving school students around WA who were invited to write a short 200 word essay about healthy eating and outline their favourite healthy recipe. The initiative was based on the belief that it is essential that young people learn about how to prepare healthy meals and to develop habits that will lead to a healthier lifestyle as an adult. The book has generated unexpected interest and is being praised by the health promotion industry, teachers and students alike
One such school is CAPS Coolgardie where Indigenous students are not only learning about the fundamentals of music but healthy food preparation as well
Another is the Belmay Primary School, that in partnership with Musica Viva is building a sound garden in the grounds of the school, recently hosted a Musica Viva In Schools concert and has introduced the cookbook into their Indigenous Leadership Program
