Musica Viva In Schools and the Australian Curriculum

Arts and Its Place in the Australian Curriculum

On Thursday 24 February Musica Viva In Schools presented an arts education forum, Arts and Its Place in the Australian Curriculum, at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Hosted by Musica Viva Australia in collboration with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) it was an exciting event.

This lively panel conversation heard questions and opinions from a panel of key figures in the development and implementation of the Australian Arts Curriculum. Panellists discussed the topic, gave feedback on ACARA’s consultation process on the curriculum draft, advised on timelines for revision and implementation, and pondered the music education needs of children.

The panellists included Ms Linda Lorenza and Rosemary Davies (ACARA), Prof. Margaret Barrett (University of Queensland) and Mr. Jay McPherson (NSW Board of Studies). The forum was chaired by Mr John Clarke (formally of the ABC) and attended by more than 100 educators, arts workers, academics and student teachers.

Musica Viva and the Australian Curriculum - How we're involved

The Australian Curriculum and its implementation through all States and Territories represents enormous change for all teachers. Musica Viva In Schools is committed to make a significant contribution to the curriculum development process, in conjunction with other Arts organisations and liaises closely with ACARA to ensure this. In anticipation of the curriculum roll-out Musica Viva is planning to develop a series of Professional Learning programs around the Australian Arts Curriculum which will be available throughout 2012.
