Musica Viva’s innovative singing workshop for seniors, called Come Together – Music for Life in Orange – was set up in Orange in 2010, as a joint project of Musica Viva Australia and the Ethnic Communities Council of NSW. Come Together – Music for Life involved two 10 week sessions of singing workshops for seniors at the Orange Senior Citizens and Pensioners Centre, with a particular emphasis on involving people from non-English speaking backgrounds and members of the indigenous community.
Come Together – Music for Life found new voices and encouraged socialising and well-being amongst the elders of Orange. The group shared their love of singing in two performances during March 2011 at the Harmony Day celebrations and at the Seniors Week Family Concert held at the Orange Civic Theatre.
Extending the program for a further 10 weeks is currently under consideration. Watch this space!
Come Together - Music for Life is supported by a Positive Ageing Grant from the Office of Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Department of Human Services NSW and the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body, through its Community Partnerships Section.
