Borodin String Quartet – February/March 2010
Formed in 1945, the Borodin Quartet's remarkable history includes working with Dmitri Shostakovich on every one of his quartets, and performing at the funerals of both Stalin and Prokofiev. Your students will experience one of the great quartets of our time and a living link to the legacy of the past century as they bring us the music of the Russian masters: Borodin, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev.
The Harp Consort – May 2010
The Harp Consort will transport your students to a different time and place, in this very special concert. The group members, inspired by the seventeenth century harp consort of the court of Charles I, improvise on a collection of early music instruments including guitars, viol de gamba, fiddles, shawm, bagpipes and percussion. Dance is also a signature component of the group, adding a unique dimension of drama and comedy. “We try to take the audience on a journey – not just to a place, but also to a time,” says Lawrence-King. On this Australian tour the journey is to seventeenth century Ireland and the music of Turlough O'Carolan, considered the most famous Irish harpist and the grandfather of that country’s traditional music.
Paul Lewis – June/July 2010
Now recognised as the “great Beethoven pianist of his day”, Paul Lewis is one of the most celebrated musicians of his generation, moving seamlessly from solo recitals to chamber music to concerto performances. Lewis will take your students on a journey from darkness to light. “The B minor Adagio is one of Mozart’s blackest pieces ever. Out of that comes the Schumann Fantasie – an explosion of passion. Liszt’s Vallée d'Obermann, a work of great virtuosity and fireworks, also has great nobility. These two works provide the emotional arc of the program. To end the program, Beethoven’s ‘Waldstein’ Sonata – the French call it ‘The Dawn’. To me, it’s like sitting and watching the sun rise.”
Pavel Haas Quartet – July/August 2010
Pavel Haas, the Czech composer, was imprisoned in Theresienstadt in 1941 and murdered three years later at Auschwitz. But he left behind a legacy of marvellous compositions including three wonderful quartets. The highly-acclaimed Pavel Haas quartet, united in the member’s love for the composer’s music, with the blessing of Haas’ daughter, decided to adopt his name to remedy his comparative obscurity. On this tour, they will perform Haas’ String Quartet no 2, as well as works by Dvorák, Haydn and Stanhope.
