Beloved as an installation and conceptual artist, Sonya Lifschitz shines in a stripped-back piano recital for Sydney Morning Masters.

Prepare to be blown away by her interpretation of the Chaconne from Bach’s Partita No 2, a cherished work performed here in its left-hand arrangement by Brahms. It’s paired with selections from Brahms’ Six Pieces for Piano, intimate pieces that range from the pensive to the restless, serving as ideal showcases for Lifschitz’ sensitivity and dramatic attack.

Lifschitz will also play George Crumb’s A Little Suite for Christmas, A.D. 1979, sure to be a great discovery for many audiences. Inspired by the Scrovegni Chapel frescoes, specifically their “childlike, nearly innocent style”, this “aural tableau” tells the story of the Nativity with great delicacy and colour.

The Suite is followed by Janáček’s Piano Sonata 1. X. 1905, a powerful two-movement work awash in melancholy.
