Composition activities are a fantastic way to inspire your students to be creative and engage with music in new and exciting ways. In this workshop participants will sing, play and move to explore musical elements, leading to simple composition and performance. No prior music experience necessary.
AT THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL:
- engage in practical activities involving listening, singing, playing, moving and making music
- discover accessible entry points into improvisation through voice, percussion and other sound sources
- explore improvisation as a basis for creativity, self-expression, connection and communication
- engage in simple composition and notation techniques for use in the classroom
Jess (AKA Pheno) is an Australian guitarist, vocalist, composer, and Musica Viva in Schools Teaching Artist. Her career spans over twenty years, she has performed and recorded for theatre, dance, television, and visual art collaborations. Since 2006 Jess has worked with Musica Viva in Schools Jess has in ensembles Imbosima, Zeeko and her current MVIS (Musica Viva In Schools) show is Two Wheel Time Machine featuring her composition ‘Bicycle’ which is the basis for this show.
Jess directs the Girls Jazz program at the ANU Open School and has also taught at the Australian Institute of Music (SYD) and University of Western Sydney as well as SIMA’s Young Women’s Jazz Workshops. She holds a BAMus from ANU (Hons 1st Class) and a Diploma of Educational Studies from Warrane College (UK). She also taught music at the Canberra Institute of Technology and as a guitar teacher at Burgmann and Radford College. Currently, Jess is studying a Master of Music Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, on an RTP scholarship, and was also selected to be part of the inaugural Equity in Jazz Program.
As a performer and composer, Jess is a highly sort after artist and in 2022 Jess will be working on commissions for The Australian Art Orchestra Market Street series and a full-length theatre work for The Street Theatre, ACT.

Completing this Musica Viva workshop will contribute to 2 hours of Accredited PD addressing 3.3.2 and 3.5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
3.3.2 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking.
3.5.2 Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication strategies to support student understanding, participation, engagement and achievement.
Every attendee will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation.
