Arcadia Winds | Regional

Arcadia Winds are trailblazers for Australian wind music. Awarded a fellowship at the Australian National Academy of Music upon their formation in late 2013, they became Musica Viva Australia’s inaugural FutureMakers musicians from 2015–17. They have brought their brand of energetic, joyful and spontaneous performance to festival stages in almost every state and territory in the country; concert halls across mainland China; and listeners around the world through broadcasts of the BBC Proms Australia chamber music series. And they have revelled in musical partnerships with internationally renowned performers including the Australian String Quartet; piano virtuosi Lambert Orkis, Paavali Jumppanen and Anna Goldsworthy; and woodwind masters Ole Kristian Dahl and Thorsten Johanns.

A desire to celebrate and promote Australian music has led Arcadia Winds to commission and perform works by composers such as Elliott Gyger, Natalie Williams, Andrew Ford, Lachlan Skipworth, Kate Neal, Peter de Jager, Sam Smith and Elizabeth Younan. In 2017, they recorded Lachlan Skipworth’s Echoes and Lines on their debut self-titled EP, released in partnership with ABC Classics and Musica Viva. Equally focused on inspiring a love of, and participation in, wind music in the next generation, Arcadia Winds recently completed a five-year journey with the Musica Viva In Schools (MVIS) program, having toured their show, The Air I Breathe, to tens of thousands of school children across the country.

"Captivating from the moment they took to the stage. Playing with great gusto and passion, these five uber talented musicians...stole the hearts of everyone in the crowd."

Classical masterpieces arranged or winds.

MOZART arr. Linckelmann Overture to The Magic Flute, K620

DEBUSSY arr. Linckelmann Children’s Corner, L. 113

MOZART Serenade No. 11 for winds in E-flat major, K. 375

MUSSORGSKY arr. Linckelmann Pictures at an Exhibition

The program begins with Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, an iconic curtain-raiser that continues to thrill audiences the world over, its magnificent harmonies transforming into a rollicking, breakneck roller coaster ride. This is followed by Debussy’s charming Children’s Corner. Written for Debussy’s daughter, ‘Chou-Chou’, this endearing set of miniatures will delight adults and children alike. The first half is rounded out with Mozart’s Serenade in E-flat Major, whose opening chords the composer himself described as ‘the most delightful surprise in the world.’ The concert’s second half is dedicated to that beloved masterpiece, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. This arrangement for wind quintet captures the delightful colours and textures of Maurice Ravel’s 1922 adaptation, while retaining the intimacy of the original.
