Bernadette Harvey is one of Australia’s finest pianists and teachers, and for Musica Viva Australia’s 2021 season she has brought together her cherished colleagues Miles Mullin-Chivers and Harry Bennetts. The unearthly slow movement that gives Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ Trio its name is just one of the concert’s highlights; a brand new Piano Trio by Australian composer Donald Hollier, commissioned by Musica Viva, complete this morning of chamber music: music to engage and delight the heart, the mind and the ear.

Watch this video of Bernadette performing Chopin’s Étude C-sharp minor, Op 10 No 4, captured in her acclaimed Discover Musica Viva livestreamed concert in October, 2020.

Donald Hollier

Easily reaching the 10,000 hours required for mastery, Donald Hollier is a senior composer who writes music every day – wonderful, theatrical, expansive music, that speaks of a lifetime’s emotions and knowledge. Donald’s Piano Trio was written for Bernadette Harvey, Lerida Delbridge and Miles Mullin-Chivers, to be premiered at their Sydney Morning Masters concert on 22 September 2021. It was commissioned by Musica Viva Australia with support from Create NSW.

Born in Sydney, Donald Hollier studied piano at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music. Following studies in Vienna and London, he was appointed the first Director of Music at Sydney’s Newington College in 1962. He was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship in 1973, and in 1974 received his D.Mus. from the University of London. Donald’s many commissions include an opera, works for chorus and orchestra, stage works, chamber music, and solo pieces for piano, harpsichord and organ.
