The Orava Quartet and pianist Daniel de Borah join forces for this one-off concert in March, presenting well-known favourites as well as rarities that deserve to take centre stage more often.

Opening the program is a traditional Nordic song arranged for strings, Ye Honest Bridal Couple / Sønderho Bridal TrilogyPart I. A set of two traditional wedding tunes, hailing from the Faroe Islands and from the Danish island, Fanø, they represent both the reverent devotion and joy of the wedding ceremony.

These folk songs are followed by Wojciech Kilar’s Orawa, the work which gave the Quartet its name and which they have performed widely to acclaim. Rhythmically vigorous and full of rustic melodies, it’s inspired by highland folklore and is spontaneous and energetic in character.

The Oravas will present another signature work, Schulhoff’s String Quartet No 1. Just as spirited as the Kilar, it is a perfect showcase for the musicians’ tight ensemble and considerable technical aplomb.

Capping it all off is Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E Flat, the finest of the composer’s large-scale chamber works and one that helped establish his towering reputation. Dedicated to his beloved Clara, it is appropriately expressive and often romantic in character, seeming to encompass all the colours of a bold and daring life.
