The String Quartet. Four voices, an infinite range of expression. No wonder, then, that some of chamber music’s most cherished works are for the string quartet, like Beethoven’s first ‘Razumovsky’ Quartet, rich and rewarding as it breaks all the rules. Or Britten’s translucent Divertimenti, an early work which hints at great things to come.

This is Doric String Quartet’s heartland. The internationally acclaimed UK-based quartet, which is currently recording and touring the complete quartets of Beethoven, brings its luminous sound and immaculate interpretations to everything it does.

And then they take it a step further. In 2019 the Doric String Quartet gave the world premiere of Brett Dean’s String Quartet No. 3 and now they return for another contemporary masterpiece, Thomas Adès Alchymia for Basset Clarinet and String Quartet. Hailed as ‘simply one of the best chamber music compositions of our time’ (Guardian) this major work has become an instant classic. Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to welcome pioneering Australian clarinettist Lloyd Van’t Hoff to add his own, distinctive voice to this prized ensemble as they turn sound into gold.

"Time stood still in the Andantino (no one does ppp quite like the Dorics) while the Finale was rendered with pure passion."
— Bachtrack
"Lloyd Van’t Hoff is a technical and expressive master of his instrument."
— The Age
