Musica Viva Brings the Z.E.N. Trio to Australia

Published: 2 August 2022, by Musica Viva Australia

Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to bring exceptional young artists the Z.E.N. Trio to Australia, for the first time ever, in an eight-city national tour from 10th to 27th August.

Comprised of internationally recognised soloists Zhang Zuo (pianist), Esther Yoo (violinist) and Narek Hakhnazaryan (cellist), the Z.E.N. Trio has been commended by Vancouver Classical Music as a talented group who “plays gorgeously, really think with one mind and already provide readings of striking thoughtfulness and sensitivity.”

Continuing their commitment to commissioning new Australian works, Musica Viva Australia has commissioned Australian composer and Musica Viva FutureMaker, Matt Laing to create a work which will play to the strengths of the Z.E.N. Trio.

Throughout this national tour, two programs are on offer, with each program including both Arno Babajanian’s trio and the world premiere of Laing’s work. These pieces will then be followed by either Dvořák’s intoxicating ‘Dumky’ or Brahms’ Romantic trio.

Since meeting as BBC New Generation Artists in 2015, the Z.E.N. Trio has since performed concerts together for BBC Radio, as well as across the UK, Europe, China, Canada and United States. While the trio’s name, ‘Z.E.N.’ is an acronym for the three artists’ initials, it also represents the philosophy with which they approach chamber music making - the forgoing of the self for total togetherness.
