What a way to begin the year. Our first concert tour of 2026, A Winter’s Journey, came to a close after an extraordinary run, with audiences across the country embracing this hauntingly beautiful reimagining of Winterreise.

British superstar tenor Allan Clayton and Australian pianist Kate Golla reprised their acclaimed interpretation, first premiered in Australia and at London’s Barbican in 2022. The seamless collaboration between voice and piano – in perfect harmony with the stunning visions of the Australian landscape by iconic artist Fred Williams – captivated audiences and critics alike.

During the tour, we were delighted to share a special evening with our South Australian wine partner, Chalk Hill Wines. Hosted in the Alpha Crucis Room at their McLaren Vale home, the event brought guests together for an intimate experience of conversation, fine wine and exceptional food. A bespoke two-course menu paired with a curated selection of award-winning wines set the scene for connection and reflection.

Paul Kildea, Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia, led a lively discussion with Allan Clayton and Kate Golla

‘The idea was that we transplant a conversation between old friends around a dinner table into a beautiful space with many tables. Except that I’m not sure we do talk the way we did at the wondrous Chalk Hill Wines – replete with exquisite food and wine – when we are at home sharing a chop. I got to ask the British tenor Allan Clayton and the Australian pianist Kate Golla questions a curious journalist might pose. And because they are old friends (and without a minder), they answered them. What transpired was an inspiring and organic conversation about creative practice, about repertory and careers, from two outstanding artists who two days later would finish their tour of A Winter’s Journey.

'The best part was the engagement with guests – both at the table where the food kept coming (and coming!) and in the questions posed during the conversation – and what they revealed about our passionate and knowledgeable audiences in this country. This of course includes Tom Harvey and his team at Chalk Hill, who look after us so well and are as genuinely excited about this relationship as we are. Such partnerships offer a way for all of us to support the work and culture of organisations throughout the country, much to our delight.’

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the team at Chalk Hill Wines for their generous hospitality, shared enthusiasm – and ongoing generosity towards our growing partnership. Collaborations like these not only enrich the concert experience but also help sustain and celebrate the cultural life of communities across Australia. We look forward to next time!
