Behind many music performances is a team of skilled technicians shaping what audiences see and hear – and a new generation is stepping up to hone their craft with Musica Viva Australia.

Now in its third year, Musica Viva Australia’s Creative Development Mentorship continues to open doors for emerging and established creatives and technicians who wish to apply their skills and knowledge to the chamber music context.

After welcoming its first round of 2026 mentees on the national tour of A Winter’s Journey – including emerging director Ruby Lorraine, mentored by renowned Australian director Dr Lindy Hume AM – the project is preparing for its next opportunity: a Perth-based mentee, Oliver Beeson, working alongside master piano technician Dr Paul Tunzi AM on Beethoven’s Ghost.

Generously supported by the Ian Potter Foundation, the mentorship offers paid, hands-on training with industry experts across national tours and livestream productions. It’s a vital way of ensuring the knowledge of highly experienced technicians is passed on, helping to meet growing demand, and supporting and sustaining the ongoing evolution of the chamber music in Australia.

Watch mentees Sasha and Reuben reflect on their time during the livestream of the 2025 Strike A Chord National Final. Mentored by audiovisual specialist David McKinnon and his team at CVP Events, they were guided through the technical and artistic nuances of livestreaming classical music – from setting up and operating the cameras to interpreting a musical score for filming.

Experiences like this are helping to build the next generation of specialists, ensuring chamber music continues to evolve and thrive both on and off the stage – and we’re delighted to be part of it.
